Black Leopards defender Cameron Carnell could emerge as a target for Venda Football Academy should the club complete its anticipated coaching appointment ahead of the new season.

The Siya crew has learnt that Venda Football Academy are closing in on the appointment of Stanford Nkoane as their new head coach as preparations continue for the 2026/27 Motsepe Foundation Championship campaign.

Nkoane is understood to be the leading candidate for the position and would be making a return to the club, having previously worked at VFA before his stint with Leicesterford City FC.

Insiders have indicated that Carnell's name has surfaced in discussions around potential reinforcements for the Limpopo-based outfit, although no deal has been concluded at this stage.

Sources close to the situation have suggested that the possibility of a move is linked to the working relationships between those involved in recommending Nkoane for the position and individuals familiar with Carnell's situation, making the defender one of the players who could potentially come into consideration if the coaching appointment is finalised.

Carnell joined Leopards in February after spending time with several clubs during his development and early professional career.

The 23-year-old left-back is the nephew of former Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs defender Bradley Carnell, who recently parted ways with Major League Soccer side Philadelphia Union.

Having come through the youth ranks at the now-defunct Bidvest Wits before spells with Maritzburg United, now known as Durban City FC, and Sekhukhune United, Carnell has continued to build his experience in the professional game.

While VFA's immediate focus remains on finalising their coaching structure, sources believe Carnell could be among the players considered as the club looks to strengthen its squad for the upcoming campaign.
