Barry Ferguson predicts hefty Rangers profit on ‘ridiculous’ Youssef Chermiti transfer

Barry Ferguson has high hopes for Youssef Chermiti at Rangers.

The Gers icon has no doubt that the Portugal Under-21 international can be developed into a quality number nine, with the Ibrox side expected to make a hefty profit off him in the coming future.

Last summer, the Light Blues spent £8million to sign the 21-year-old from Everton, but he hasn’t been able to convince some fans in G51 so far.

Chermiti has been a big-game player for Danny Rohl, but it’s his inconsistency in front of goal that has frustrated supporters of the Govan side.

Andrew Cavenagh’s recruitment strategy at Ibrox has arguably been hit or miss in the last two transfer windows, but he could potentially make significant money on the ex-Toffees star if things fall into place.

Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show on 22 May, Ferguson said, “I’ve seen enough in him, if I’m being honest with you, that there’s a right good player in there. There’s no doubt in my mind. He stepped up on the big occasions, but it’s the other games, no disrespect, but your St Mirrens and your Falkirks, they’re the ones you’ve got to be banging goals in against.

“They got him for £8m or £9m, it was a lot of money. But I think if you work hard with him, there’s a player who you could make a hefty profit on. Everyone has a price on their head. And if somebody comes in with a ridiculous offer, you have to seriously consider it.”

Chermiti had a slow start at the Gers, but the centre-forward has come into his own in recent months, scoring nine goals in the William Hill Premiership since the turn of the year.

The Portuguese youngster has been Rohl’s go-to option up front, with the Light Blues’ other summer signing Bojan Miovski failing to live up to expectations.

Ryan Naderi seemed to have formed a decent duo with Chermiti in attack, but the German striker’s injury meant he missed the majority of games after the split.

With the former Everton ace showcasing glimpses of his potential of late, and Rohl’s other options at number nine not necessarily firing on all cylinders, letting the Portuguese centre-forward go in the summer may be difficult.

Rangers fans want to see Cavenagh and the recruitment team in G51 sign a reliable goalscorer who can push Rohl to success.

Miovski has been a bit-part player since returning to Scotland from Girona and it wouldn’t be surprising to see him look for pastures new sooner rather than later.

The jury is still out on Naderi, and the Gers should go into the market and look for someone to shoulder the goal-scoring burden with Chermiti.

Rohl is already under pressure going into the 2026-27 campaign and the German manager certainly needs the American owners to get things right off the pitch in the coming months.
