Celtic have been linked with a move for Scotland international Andy Robertson this summer as he prepares to leave Liverpool on a free transfer.

The 32-year-old spent nine years with the Reds and has made nearly 400 appearances, with two Premier Leagues and the Champions League to show for it.

Robertson will go to the World Cup with Scotland in the coming weeks, and is expected to have a new club by the time pre-season has got underway.

Tottenham have been among the most strongly linked clubs, with a move coming close to fruition in the January transfer window.

Celtic transfer chiefs will be aware that they will not be able to compete financially should the Lilywhites return for Robertson, although relegation from the Premier League would almost certainly take a potential move off the table.

Breaking news on latest signings, departures, and contract news from the Parkhead boardroom.

Former Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness exclusively told Football Insider last month that Robertson may join Celtic over Tottenham this summer.

The left-back began his career in the Celtic academy, and has talked of having dreams of returning to play at Parkhead at some point in his career.

But there are issues with such a move, too. Kieran Tierney returned from Arsenal last summer and has enjoyed a fantastic year back in Scotland, and Marcelo Saracchi may be signed permanently after a positive stint on loan.

Should Robertson want to continue to feature in the final years of his career, his best option is probably not at Celtic.

Tottenham are also relatively well-stocked at left-back, with Djed Spence, Destiny Udogie and Souza all featuring there at stages of this season.

Spence also regularly plays on the right, however, and at just 19-years-old, Souza could well be sent out on loan.

Speaking to Ian Wright on The Overlap podcast on Thursday, Robertson said: “Tottenham was close in January, I wouldn’t deny that, it was close. That was a serious consideration.

“But it didn’t happen for X, Y and Z. It’s so hard because I’ve got such a massive tournament coming up, which is taking my full focus. It’s hard to see, when you’re in the tournament, football beyond that.

“I know I need to get my future sorted for my family and for myself, and know where I’m gonna go for my future, which I’ll do in the next couple of weeks.”

Celtic are still yet to appoint their new permanent manager, with no clear favourite having emerged.

The new boss and the formation they will choose to play could well prove to be the difference in Robertson’s future.

We can confirm Andy Robertson will bring his Reds career to an end at the conclusion of the current season.

He will do so as a Liverpool legend ❤️

Should Celtic begin to play a three-back formation, in the same way Steve Clarke’s Scotland do, the left-back’s arrival at Parkhead would make sense.

Clarke plays Robertson as a wing-back, while Tierney forms the left side of the back-three, filling in as a centre-back but overlapping when necessary.
