Two weeks after scripting a memorable cup final comeback, Durban City FC enjoyed an evening of glamour and celebration as the KZN province rolled out the red carpet for its newest champions.

Fresh off their historic 2026 Nedbank Cup triumph over TS Galaxy in Polokwane, the club was honoured at a glittering Gala Dinner hosted by KwaZulu-Natal's Department of Sport, Arts and Culture at Durban's Southern Sun Elangeni & Maharani.

The evening brought together football dignitaries, government leaders and representatives from across the sporting fraternity, with KZN Premier Thami Ntuli and MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture Mntomuhle Khawula leading the celebrations.

There was no missing the champions as players and coaches arrived sharply dressed in matching navy blue suits — the same look that became synonymous with their confident build-up to the Nedbank Cup final. Club chairman Farook Kadodia added to the elegance of the evening in classic black tie, as the mood inside the ballroom reflected both pride and relief after a season-defining victory.

In a statement, the Department said the victory had "done more than deliver silverware," describing it as a moment that had "restored pride to KwaZulu-Natal and brought honour to the nation." The triumph, it added, served as a reminder of the province's rich football talent and the strength of its development pathways.

For many young footballers across KZN's townships and rural communities, Durban City's rise has become a symbol of possibility — proof that local dreams can reach the national stage.

The gala also fulfilled MEC Khawula's public promise that provincial recognition would follow should the club bring the Nedbank Cup home. By uniting sporting leaders, government officials and stakeholders under one roof, the evening positioned Durban City's achievement as more than just a football victory, but a catalyst for unity, youth development and renewed belief in sport as a driver of opportunity.

As tributes poured in throughout the night, Durban City were celebrated not only as Nedbank Cup champions, but as standard-bearers for KwaZulu-Natal's resurgence as a breeding ground for champions once again.
