Former Mamelodi Sundowns man Dan Semake is of the opinion that Betway Premiership referees should be given some benefit of the doubt for their efforts this season.
While the campaign initially started with fewer blunders, it concluded under heavy scrutiny from fans, coaches, and analysts who argues that some errors by the referees impacted cup knockouts, relegation battles, and the shape of the log table.

Over the course of the season, some matches were marred by questionable decisions regarding penalties, disallowed goals, red cards, and unpunished tackles.
Semake believes the Video Assistant Referee [VAR] will play a huge role in assisting local referees keep up with the fast paced football that is being played nowadays.
The South African Football Association has secured the much needed funding for the VAR project, thanks to people like the minister of sports, arts and culture Gayton McKenzie.
"The standard it wasn't that bad and there is still a room of improvement regarding that department and not forgetting these referees are human beings and lot of mistakes will be made by them," Semake tells KickOff.
Despite the outcry, Senake believes the match officials deserve to be honored afain this season for their efforts.
"Yes we should have a referee of the season merely because they need to be recognized and appreciated for the work that they are doing simple.
