The former Zambia international was shown the exit door alongside head coach Mwenya Chipepo, reportedly due to a string of poor results.
Katongo retired from professional football in 2017 and has since been building his coaching career, with the role at Nkana representing one of his earliest opportunities at senior level.
According to Pan Africa Football, Katongo and Chipepo were placed on special leave two months ago following bad performances in the FAZ MTN Super League.
Nkana confirmed the duo's departure in a statement released earlier this week.
"Nkana Football Club confirms that the club has mutually agreed to part ways with head coach Mwenya Chipepo and first assistant coach Christopher Katongo," the club stated.
"The club thanks Chipepo and Katongo for their service and contribution during their time with Nkana FC and wishes them well in their future endeavours.
