GFA renews push for safer matchday operations on May 9 remembrance

The General Secretary of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Prosper Harrison Addo, has called for a renewed commitment to stadium safety and discipline during the 25th-anniversary commemoration of the May 9 Accra Sports Stadium disaster.Speaking at a solemn ceremony held at the stadium on Saturday, Addo joined government officials, club representatives, and bereaved families to honour the 127 fans who lost their lives during a league match between rivals Accra Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko in 2001.Twenty-five years on, we honour the memory of our fallen football faithful whose passion for the game led them to an unexpected end, Addo stated during the wreath-laying ceremony.He emphasized that the anniversary serves as a bridge between a painful past and a safer future for the sport in Ghana.The GFA scribe urged all stakeholders to move beyond ritualistic mourning and focus on tangible improvements in matchday operations.We continue to stand with the families and must apply the lessons learned to improve our football, he added, noting that infrastructure and crowd management remain top priorities for the association.The event concluded with calls for fans to embrace sportsmanship, ensuring that the tragedy of twenty-five years ago is never repeated in Ghanaian stadia.
