Konstantinos Mavropanos was West Ham’s shining light in heartbreak Arsenal defeat, he’s secured his future

Konstantinos Mavropanos almost single-handedly kept West Ham United in Sunday’s game against Arsenal before they were narrowly beaten 1-0 at the London Stadium.

Leandro Trossard’s late goal eventually secured the three points for the Premier League leaders, who survived a Callum Wilson strike in the dying seconds after a lengthy VAR check ruled it out.

Pablo was adjudged to have fouled David Raya when replays showed that he had stretched across the goalkeeper to grip his opposite arm.

The defeat has left the Hammers in serious peril, with victory for Tottenham against Leeds United on Monday set to leave them four points from safety with two games remaining.

West Ham transfer chiefs will have several players to think about if they go down, and Mavropanos is certainly among them.

Football Insider exclusively revealed in April that Mavropanos wants to join Borussia Dortmund this summer, with the German side among several clubs showing interest.

And those eyes would have only intensified after his performance against Arsenal on Sunday evening.

Mikel Arteta’s side started the game brilliantly, and could have been ahead immediately when Trossard was denied by Mads Hermansen with a header from a corner.

They looked certain to take the lead minutes later, when Riccardo Calafiori flicked on Declan Rice’s free-kick, the ball flying past the West Ham goalkeeper.

But it was former Arsenal man Mavropanos to stick out a leg and somehow direct the ball away from goal with his instep.

The 28-year-old was superb all afternoon, making seven clearances, off the line twice, making three blocks and winning all but three of the duels he contested.

If West Ham do go down, Mavropanos will be the subject of interest from throughout Europe.

Mavropanos is not the only player who will be heavily linked with a move away this summer if West Ham are relegated.

El Hadji Malick Diouf and Crysencio Summerville enjoyed strong games on Sunday and will both have plenty of potential suitors.

Mateus Fernandes could have secured West Ham three points when he went through on goal and saw his shot saved by Raya before Trossard’s goal at the other end, but he, too, is gathering interest.

Even captain Jarrod Bowen could be on the move this summer, with the England international surely far too good to spend a season of his prime years in the Championship.

West Ham will keep hope in a miracle before the end of the season, but the situation could look extremely dire by Tuesday morning.
