Kaizer Chiefs secured back-to-back wins in the Betway Premiership after defeating AmaZulu 1-0 on Saturday afternoon.
There was nothing at stake except pride for this contest, as Chiefs had already secured third spot with victory over Sekhukhune United last week and moving seven points clear of Usuthu who look destined to finish in fourth position.
The Chiefs co-coaches handed a recall to Ethan Chislett and Mfundo Vilakazi, who made an impressive cameo off the bench against Sekhukhune, while former Amakhosi midfielder Pule Ekstein made his return to the AmaZulu starting line-up.
The encounter was played at a lively tempo from the onset as it was evident that neither side were fighting for their lives, with both sides looking to get early goals as AmaZulu's Sandile Mthethwa was denied by Brandon Petersen while Vilakazi went close with an effort from distance.
That was as good as it got in terms of chances in the first half, as the Soweto giants were unable to take full advantage of their possession as the likes of Flavio Silva and Glody Lilepo were kept quiet in the final third.
The encounter was a lot more open in the second half as Ekstein looked to get himself on the score-sheet with a strike from distance, but Petersen was on hand to make the save while Chislett and Reeve Frosler went close for the Soweto giants.
Chiefs' dominance continued but they had wait until the final 20 minutes to get the breakthrough as Lilepo found the back of the net, although his afternoon came to an end right away as he picked up a second yellow card for taking off his shirt while celebrating.
Usuthu coach Arthur Zwane unsurprisingly threw on more attackers as the half drew to a close and threw bodies forward, as Petersen was proving his worth by pulling off some fine saves to keep his clean sheet intact.
