The Amakhosi came into the clash in better spirits after a 1-1 draw against league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns on Wednesday, although they were without the services of Mduduzi Shabalala, who underwent surgery on his shoulder this week, ruling him out for the rest of the campaign.
Sekhukhune, meanwhile, got their first win under interim coach Paulus Masehe on Wednesday after seeing off Chippa United 3-1, but they knew maximum points against the Soweto giants will all but secure a top-eight finish heading into the final two games.
The Chiefs co-coaches went for a more attacking approach as Nkosingiphile Ngcobo and Gaston Sirino came into the side while Sibongiseni Mthethwa was on the only out-and-out central midfielder on the park, which allowed them to dominate possession in the early stages of the encounter.

Sekhukhune, meanwhile, were quite happy to sit back and soak up the pressure in the first half as they did well to thwart every entry into the 18-yard area, although Chiefs were also disappointing with their decision-making in the final third.
It was more of the same in the second period for the home side, who dominated possession in the opposition but they were let down by their decision-making as Sirino passed up a glorious opening before the hour mark by volleying over the crosbar from six-yards out.
There was a surprise return for Chiefs supporters in the second half as Tashreeq Morris was give a rare run-out for his third appearance as the coaches went for a more fresh approach upfront as Flavio Silva cut a frustrated figure in the box.
It turns out to be a masterstroke of a change from the coaches as Morris broke the deadlock with five minutes to play by turning home a cross from Glody Lilepo, before Mfundo Vilakzi wrapped up the win in second-half stoppage time to seal third spot.
Glody Lilepo remained a constant threat on both wings throughout the encounter for the Soweto giants, especially in the second half when he got the assist for Morris' goal and won the penalty.
