Amakhosi goalkeeper Brandon Petersen has received a major vote of confidence from South African football icon Benni McCarthy following another standout week in Amakhosi colours.

The Chiefs shot-stopper continues to enjoy an impressive 2025/26 campaign, and his recent displays against Sekhukhune United and, particularly, Mamelodi Sundowns appear to have caught the attention of one of the country's greatest football exports.

Following Chiefs' hard-fought 1-1 draw against Sundowns last Wednesday, before Sunday's 2-0 victory over Babina Noko, Bafana Bafana legend Benni McCarthy took to Instagram to personally praise Petersen, while also backing the goalkeeper for a place in Hugo Broos' FIFA World Cup squad.

Commenting on Petersen's post-match upload, McCarthy wrote: "Biza hope you well, my broertjie. Brilliant performance yesterday. Hopefully you get that National team call-up that you deserve, my broer. World Cup-bound."

The 31-year-old has quietly built one of the league's most consistent campaigns between the posts, producing a string of commanding displays while competing alongside Orlando Pirates' Sipho Chaine and Mamelodi Sundowns captain Ronwen Williams among the division’s elite shot-stoppers.

Petersen's numbers further strengthen his growing case for international recognition. In the league matches he has featured in this season, the Chiefs goalkeeper has kept an impressive 14 clean sheets while conceding just 12 goals.

His form has also reportedly fueled discussions surrounding a possible contract extension at Naturena, with the experienced goalkeeper proving to be one of the club's most reliable performers during a season filled with pressure and expectation.

With next month's World Cup showpiece edging closer, McCarthy's public endorsement has only added more intrigue to the debate around Hugo Broos' final squad selection.

And judging by both his performances and the support now coming from South African football royalty, Brandon Petersen's name is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.
