Former Cameroon international Alex Song believes Bafana Bafana could emerge as one of Africa’s surprise packages at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the ex-Arsenal and FC Barcelona midfielder backing Hugo Broos’ side to potentially follow in Morocco’s historic footsteps.

Speaking to journalists during the El Clasico viewing event at Fourways Mall on Sunday evening, Song praised the progress made by the South African national team under Broos and suggested Bafana could become one of the continent’s dark horses at next month’s global showpiece in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

Africa made history at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar when Morocco became the first African nation to reach the semi-finals of the tournament, defeating the likes of Spain and Portugal before eventually falling to France.

Now Song hopes another African nation can go even further.

“Bafana Bafana are doing very well. Hugo Broos is doing a very good job with the young players,” Song said.

“I expect them to go as far as possible. For me, I would like one African team to be in the final.”

The former midfielder, who earned over 40 caps for Cameroon during his international career, believes the time has arrived for African football to consistently compete with the world’s elite on the biggest stage.

“We saw Morocco managed to make it to the semi-final. We wish that Morocco, or Bafana Bafana or Senegal can be there because we need it,” he explained.

“It has been so many years that we’ve been crying saying that we have to be there. I wish this year we can see one of these teams.”
