Sources: Liverpool & Newcastle the two 'frontrunners' to sign Ligue 1 star

Lamine Camara is likely to leave Monaco this summer as Newcastle United eye a move for him alongside other Premier League suitors.

Newcastle have been linked to Camara over the last few months as he impresses in his second season in Ligue 1 with Monaco.

Sebastien Pocognoli’s side are set for a fire sale of some key stars this summer after a disappointing campaign that could see them miss out on European football altogether.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast, their poor season and previous history of selling on stars have encouraged Newcastle to advance in their pursuit of Camara.

Newcastle will be ambitious in the transfer market this summer despite their own disappointing season, with PIF backing Eddie Howe to turn their form around next season.

Sources have told Football Insider that Liverpool are interested in Camara too, so a deal will not be straightforward for Newcastle to complete.

He ranks highly among Ligue 1 midfielders for several key statistics this season, with the Magpies set to be in the market for additions in the middle of the park if some key players are sold.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: “Monaco are one of those clubs that do bring players in, develop them and then sell them for the right price.

“That’s probably why these Premier League suitors have been encouraged that maybe Camara could be prised away from the Principality this summer.

“As things stand right now, you’ve got Liverpool and Newcastle who are probably the two front runners for the Senegal international.”

Newcastle will not let their poor recent form and likely lack of European football hinder them in the transfer market this summer.
