After Kaizer Chiefs' push in the Betway Premiership came too late to challenge for the title, Soccer Laduma looks at the five statistics that indicate Amakhosi could make a serious challenge in the 2026/27 season.

They say the attack can win games but defences win titles, and the saying has proven true once again, as Orlando Pirates, even though they have scored the number of goals, they have also conceded the least 12.

Chiefs are not far behind, having conceded only 18 goals.

Amakhosi are the second behind Pirates as the team with the most clean-sheets; 15. The Buccaneers have kept 19 so far.

Kaizer Chiefs have lost five matches in the league, three consecutively, during a period that could have defined them as not challenging for the title.

Amakhosi, however, have shown character, coming from behind twice this season to rescue a point in a 1-1 draw against AmaZulu and were 1-0 down against Orbit College, before turning things around to eventually win 3-1.

Winning the league does not consist only of beating your rivals as a big team, but the results from big matches carry bragging rights, which can influence momentum.

The Glamour Boys would feel encouraged that they have not lost to Mamelodi Sundowns this season, drawing two matches, and they ended a losing streak in the Soweto derby, in a 1-1 draw in the return fixture, after a 3-0 defeat in the first round.

Makabi Lilepo showed a big promise after his signing in January 2025, scoring six goals in his first six months at Chiefs.

However, Lilepo not showing up among the highest scorers has affected Chiefs somewhat this season, but Flavio Silva netting ten goals in all competitions could make The Glamour Boys' attack look dangerous for next season, should Lilepo get his act together.

Chiefs had not reached a 50-point mark in the league since the 2019/20 season and clocked 51 points with their win over Sekhukhune United, as they qualified for the CAF Confederation Cup.

Amakhosi only posted 32 points, 36 points and 44 points in the last three seasons, respectively, showing a remarkable improvement in the current campaign.
