Amad Diallo's chances of Man United revival assessed after match-winning World Cup display
Manchester United winger Amad Diallo reminded Michael Carrick of his abilities after his match-winning performance for the Ivory Coast against Ecuador.
Diallo ended the season in poor form at Man United, raising concerns over whether Michael Carrick could look to sell the 23-year-old this summer.
Used as a wing-back under Ruben Amorim, Diallo has failed to nail down a position in Carrick's starting line-up since he arrived in January.
Three days before Carrick's arrival, Diallo had signed a new long-term contract to remain at Old Trafford until 2030, but his influence on the team has since deteriorated.
Carrick is looking to add further competition for places in the squad, including the expected addition of a new winger.
Diallo though used his first opportunity at the World Cup to send a message to Carrick.
With the game goalless, Diallo came on as a second half substitute for the final 34 minutes of the game.
Diallo had a positive impact on proceedings and his 90th minute strike secured a precious 1-0 win for the Ivory Coast.
He was not afraid to drive forward with the ball, making five progressive carries and successfully completing six of his seven dribbles, the most of any player across the 90 minutes.
Making one key pass, Diallo also won seven of his nine ground duels, and made three recoveries.
Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Diallo was never for sale this summer, and this performance proved that the Red Devils are right to hold that stance.
Man United look to be concentrating their efforts on signing a new midfielder right now, but the club could be about to accelerate a pursuit of PSG winger Bradley Barcola.
Reports indicate that Barcola has handed in a transfer request at PSG, and Man United are among a number of clubs who could make a move to sign the 23-year-old.
A left winger, Diallo would be in direct competition with Barcola, whilst Carrick already has Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha who can play in that position.
It is a good dilemma for Carrick to have, should Barcola arrive, as Man United need to strengthen their squad ahead of a return to the Champions League.
