Archie Gray is Tottenham's best player and a 'victim' of their misguided summer transfer plan - Insider
Archie Gray's future at Tottenham has been plunged into doubt as Roberto De Zerbi eyes several new midfield signings this summer.
De Zerbi is planning a shake-up of his midfield options over the coming months after Spurs were close to getting relegated last season.
Lucas Bergvall has reportedly asked to leave the club, while Gray has also been linked away over the last few months.
The Tottenham manager is believed to want to add several new midfielders to his squad, and is content to let some younger players leave the club.
Former Spurs senior scout Mick Brown indicated to Football Insider that Gray could be sold to make way for some new arrivals before next season.
He is expected to have a bright future in the game, but may not be ready to stake a claim as a regular starter under De Zerbi each week.
Gray won Spurs' Player of the Year award for last season, so is clearly well-liked by their fanbase after some impressive showings.
He struggled for minutes under De Zerbi, however, with just eight minutes off the bench in their final five matches of the campaign.
Several clubs have been linked to Gray, and Tottenham could cash in on his potential in the coming months.
“When people were falling like flies, Archie Gray went through it all. He was their best player week in, week out, at full-back, in midfield, as a center-half, whatever," Brown exclusively told Football Insider.
“Then he becomes a victim. From going to having a stand named after him, he's out of favour. I don't understand. I always thought that he was holding our regard as a young player.
“He did nothing to dispel that with his performances. I know what I saw. He's one of those you knew you would look on as a solid player.”
Gray and Bergvall could move on soon, while Spurs seem unlikely to land Joao Palhinha on a permanent deal after turning down the chance to exercise his buy option.
De Zerbi clearly wants to add fresh blood to his midfield ranks, with the club having an £80million bid to sign Sandro Tonali rejected earlier this week.
Despite that setback, Football Insider's sources have revealed that Spurs are planning another bid for Tonali to avoid their deal being hijacked by Man City.
New reports have also claimed that they are in advanced talks to sign West Ham star Mateus Fernandes, who is one of their top targets as it stands.
