Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has identified Ghanas failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as a big factor behind the sacking of head coach Otto Addo.Speaking on Channel One TV, the Ghana all-time top scorer argued that the mark against Addos tenure was established early on when the team missed its first AFCON in 21 years.Gyan defended the former manager, stating Addo performed as well as possible with the resources at his disposal. He noted that while public disappointment peaked with the AFCON exit, a string of poor results in international friendlies ultimately made Addos position untenable.People were very disappointed when we didnt qualify to the AFCON.
So that mark was already there and it got to a time the friendly games were also part of it, we werent getting the results that we should get, he stated. It happens everywhere.
You can be the best coach in the world, when results are not coming like the way people want they can take a decision.
It doesnt mean you are a bad coach, he added. The Ghana Football Association (GFA) dismissed Addo just 72 days before the 2026 FIFA World Cup.Following the dismissal, the GFA appointed veteran Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz on a short-term deal to lead the Black Stars through the upcoming global tournament.
