Bafana legend on Maseko's winner: Not one of the best goals, but...

Doctor Khumalo has delivered his verdict on the performance of Bafana Bafana's match-winner Thapelo Maseko in what was a crucial result against South Korea in the wee hours of Thursday.

Bafana punched their ticket to the knockout stages after upsetting favourites South Korea at Estadio Monterrey.

Super-sub Tshepang Moremi turned provider to set up Thapelo Maseko, who rifled home a clinical 63rd-minute strike to seal the historic victory for South Africa.

The Speedy winger has been one of Bafana’s key players at the global showpiece. After all, it was his attempt at goal that earned Bafana a penalty against Czechia, coolly converted by Teboho Mokoena.

Maseko took more shots at goal than any other player on the field against South Korea, registering 5 total shots and 6 touches inside the opposition's box.

Reviewing the match on SABC Sport, Khumalo revealed how Maseko’s teammates also deserve a share of the plaudits.

"I think we need to also compliment his teammates because none of his teammates just gave up on him. He kept on knocking, trying, trying, and eventually got it right," shared the 1996 AFCON winner.

Khumalo also analysed how the goal came about.

"When Moremi brought the ball to the right and played it, it went to Thapelo, and Thapelo said,' I'm going to try for the last time.'

"Sometimes in this game, you need luck. It was not one of the best goals when I could say, 'Wow!', but he took the chance, it went underneath the legs, and boom!

"Here, we did not need a scorcher of a goal, a goal of the game, we just needed points," explained the ex-Kaizer Chiefs playmaker.
