South Africa is waiting with bated breath for Bafana head coach Hugo Broos' squad announcement for the World Cup, which will assemble in just under two weeks.
Eyebrows were raised when SAFA lined up what appeared on paper, a weakened opposition in Panama, in two warm-up friendlies played in March.
The Canal Men, however, gave Bafana a good test, particularly in the second friendly played at Cape Town Stadium, which they won 2-1, after goalkeeping changes in the second stanza proved costly.
Hugo Broos' charges are facing the prospect of not being properly tested before coming up against Mexico in the tournament opener on 11 June, as they would be playing lowly-ranked nations in warm-up friendlies against Nicaragua (ranked 131st by FIFA) and Puerto Rico (156th).
In comparison, El Tri have organized friendlies against tough opposition leading up to the opener against Bafana, as they are set to play against Ghana on 22 May, Australia on 30 May, and will also face Serbia in preparation for a Group A campaign on home soil.
South Korea are also due to have proper tests before they start the tournament, with confirmed friendly games against Trinidad and Tobago and El Salvador before opening their campaign on 12 June.
Czechia, meanwhile, have lined-up Kosovo and Guatemala, with those friendlies scheduled for 31 May and 5 June respectively.
Bafana are the only side in the group set to come up against extremely lowly-ranked teams in warm-up friendlies, which could work for or against them during the competition.
South Africa were somewhat criticized for playing a second-string Ghana side as the last preparatory friendly before the Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Morocco last year, which, in hindsight, could have given them a sense of comfort, although they had an opening win against Angola.
