Boubacar Kamara will miss a major international tournament for France again this summer after an injury picked up while playing for Aston Villa.

The midfielder suffered another major knee injury in January, ruling him out for the remainder of the season.

Kamara had been enjoying a superb season for Villa, appearing in a staggering run of 12 wins in 13 Premier League games.

But his absence saw Unai Emery’s team fall apart, winning just four of the last 15 league games since he was ruled out.

Villa’s injury issues have been bad all over the pitch this season, but the midfield has undoubtedly been hit the hardest.

Kamara signed a new contract at Villa in July last year, with the Frenchman now under contract until at least 2030.

The midfielder arrived at Villa Park in 2022, having left his boyhood club Marseille on a free transfer.

The 26-year-old had made his debut for the Ligue 1 giants in the 2016-17 season, breaking into the team in the following campaign.

By the 2018-19 season, a 19-year-old Kamara had made 31 appearances in the league for Marseille, and would continue to be a regular until his 2022 exit.

Despite playing regularly for just three seasons in France and in less competitions, the midfielder has still made nearly 50 more appearances for Marseille than he has in his four seasons for Villa.

The major injury issues hit at the back end of the 2023-24 season, when the 26-year-old suffered a significant injury to his knee ligaments and was ruled out for around eight months.

Kamara’s chances of going to the 2024 European Championship were dashed by that injury, and it is a similar story for this summer’s World Cup after he underwent surgery on his knee in January.

The Frenchman received caps for France in 2022 and 2023, but his fitness issues are rapidly threatening to decimate his international career.

It is not only France that could benefit from a fit and firing Kamara in their team. In many ways, Villa’s form has collapsed amid the 26-year-old’s injury.

The Frenchman has featured 26 times for Emery’s team this season. Of those games, they have won 19 and lost just three in normal time.

Aston Villa is delighted to announce that Boubacar Kamara has signed a new contract with the club.

The midfielder has agreed a deal that will keep him at Villa until 2030.

He has been absent for 27 games across all competitions this season, with Villa winning just 11 of them and losing 11 – a startling difference.

Emery will be glad to see Kamara at least have a full summer to make his return to full fitness, but there must be serious through paid to his injury issues going forward.
