CAF: Morocco must move beyond Brazil draw and focus on Scotland test

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has stressed that Morocco must quickly put aside the excitement generated by its impressive draw against Brazil and focus fully on its decisive World Cup clash against Scotland in Group C of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In a report published on its official website, CAF noted that Morocco’s coaching staff has warned players against dwelling on the result against one of the tournament’s leading title contenders, emphasizing that the point earned against Brazil will have little value unless it is followed by a positive result against Scotland.

The Atlas Lions opened their World Cup campaign with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Brazil, a performance that boosted confidence within the squad and further enhanced Morocco’s growing international reputation.

However, the group standings make the Scotland fixture particularly important. Scotland enters the second round of matches with three points following its opening victory, while Morocco has one point from its draw with Brazil.

According to CAF, Morocco’s challenge will not be limited to tactical considerations. The team must also overcome the emotional aftermath of its performance against Brazil and prepare for a different type of contest against a physically demanding Scottish side known for its aerial strength, aggressive pressing, and direct style of play.

Head coach Mohamed Ouahbi believes Morocco’s players with experience in the English Premier League could play a key role in dealing with Scotland’s physical approach.

“The physical challenge will be present in second balls and aerial duels. We have to remain compact and ensure that as many players as possible stay close to the ball,” Ouahbi said. “We have a plan.”

The Moroccan coach also stressed the importance of controlling the tempo of the match and avoiding an open contest that could favor Scotland’s strengths.

“We must not feel pressure. It’s football. We have players who excel in these situations, and we also have our own strengths,” he added.

Addressing concerns over injuries, Ouahbi said the squad had calmly managed the absence of defender Nayef Aguerd and winger Abde Ezzalzouli, insisting that Morocco possesses sufficient depth to compensate for missing players.

Midfielder Azzedine Ounahi echoed his coach’s message, emphasizing that Morocco’s ambitions at the 2026 World Cup extend beyond earning respect against football’s traditional powers.

“We didn’t come here simply to play well against Brazil and stop there,” Ounahi said. “We want to go further than what we achieved in Qatar 2022, and we know that means getting a positive result against Scotland.”

He described the upcoming match as “more important and more difficult” because of the group’s current standings, adding that a victory would significantly improve Morocco’s chances ahead of its final group-stage match against Haiti.

CAF concluded that Morocco can no longer be viewed as a surprise package on the world stage following its historic run to the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup. Instead, the Atlas Lions now enter major tournaments as a respected contender, a status that brings greater expectations and requires sustained consistency.

The Scotland match will therefore offer Morocco an opportunity not only to demonstrate its ability to compete with elite teams, but also to convert strong performances into the victories needed to advance further in the tournament.
