At one stage, the race looked destined to be dominated by Iqraam Rayners and Brayan León of Mamelodi Sundowns, but with the Brazilians having completed their league programme, both players are now officially out of the running.
Currently leading the scoring charts is Sede Junior Dion of Golden Arrows on 13 goals, though the striker’s recent form has slowed dramatically, with just one goal in his last eight matches.
The 20-year-old Orlando Pirates star sits on 10 league goals, three behind Dion, and while it remains a difficult task, he is realistically the only player still active with a genuine chance of catching the Arrows forward.
Pirates still have two crucial matches remaining as they continue their pursuit of a first league title since 2012, meaning Mofokeng has both team and individual motivation heading into the final stretch of the season.
What makes the youngster’s campaign even more impressive is that he has not only delivered goals.
Mofokeng also currently leads the Betway Premiership assist charts jointly with teammate Deon Hotto, with both players sitting on eight assists each.

That means the Bafana Bafana attacker has directly contributed to 18 league goals this season, underlining his growing importance in the Buccaneers setup.
Should Mofokeng produce a strong finish over the final two games, the possibility of ending the season with both a league medal and a Golden Boot cannot be completely ruled out.
