English Championship side Wrexham have confirmed that goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has received his first senior invitation to the Nigeria national team ahead of the 2026 Unity Cup, which is scheduled to commence on Tuesday, May 26, in London, marking another major milestone in the shot-stopper’s rise in club and international football.
The Welsh club announced the development on their official social media platform, congratulating the 24-year-old goalkeeper after he was named in Nigeria’s squad for the upcoming Unity Cup tournament in the United Kingdom.
Wrexham posted: “Congratulations to Arthur Okonkwo on receiving his first call up to the Nigeria squad ahead of the Unity Cup.”
The goalkeeper, who previously represented England at youth level, completed his international switch to Nigeria and has now earned his first senior opportunity with the three-time African champions.
His inclusion is viewed as part of Nigeria coach Eric Chelle’s attempt to deepen competition in the goalkeeping department ahead of key international assignments.
Okonkwo’s strong shot-stopping displays and composure have made him one of Wrexham’s standout performers.
The Unity Cup is expected to serve as an important platform for fresh faces and fringe players to impress as Nigeria continue preparations for future competitions.
The former Arsenal academy goalkeeper now has the opportunity to challenge established names such as Stanley Nwabali and Maduka Okoye for a place in the Super Eagles squad.
