Kaizer Chiefs finished their Betway Premiership campaign with a 1-0 loss to Chippa United at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Having secured third spot heading intot he clash, the Amakhosi still looked to conclude their campaign on a high and claim three successive victories while the Chilli Boys came determined and eager to arrest a five-match winless streak and avoid the play-offs.

The Soweto giants who started a number of fringe players were given a chance to break the deadlock in the opening five minutes through Naledi Hlongwane, who took one touch too many and missed the opportunity.

Chippa came good after an underwhelming start and took the lead past the half-hour mark when Justice Figuareido beat the offside trap to run in-behind and teed-up Sammy Seabi to tap in at the far post.

There was more pressure for the Amakhosi, who nearly conceded again through a close-range strike by Sirgio Kammies from another ball in-behind, but debutant goalkeeper Takalani Mazhamba produced a tremendous save.

Chiefs continued to breathe heavily as a well-worked move wide of the area forced the defence to scramble across and cleared a low shot from Azola Matrose off the goal-line.

The Amakhosi were on the attack a minute after halftime and nearly got on level terms with a first-time shot by Luke Baartman following a cutback by Asanele Velebayi, but Dumisani Msibi outstretched save parried the effort.

As the half settled nicely, the Amakhosi showed a double substitution in the midway stage of the second half and had Gaston Sirino come on for Baartman before Tashreeq Morris replaced Hlongwane.

Chippa regained momentum a little later and could’ve doubled their lead when Matrose tossed around the defence on the far side to get a shot away from a tight angle, but Mazhama palmed away.

After an even spell, the Amakhosi threatened the equaliser from a low delivery into the area by Lebohang Maboe but Morris failed to make the opening count as the Chilli Boys kept their cushion.

The Amakhosi failed to unlock the stubborn Chilli Boys despite the late forays and ended their campaign with defeat and in third-place, while the visitors halted a five-match winless run.
