David Moyes to reignite five-year-old plan as Everton eye Djed Spence amid World Cup cameo

Everton are reportedly considering a move for Tottenham Hotspur full-back Djed Spence this summer.

The Toffees are looking to add depth to their back-line after Seamus Coleman left, with Nathan Patterson also potentially set to depart.

Jarrad Branthwaite's injury issues have placed huge stress on David Moyes' defence, with Jake O'Brien, Michael Keane and James Tarkowski appearing in almost every game this season.

Spence, who featured for England as they beat Croatia 4-2 in their World Cup opener on Wednesday, would take much of the strain off.

The 25-year-old made 44 appearances across all competitions for Tottenham this season and it remains to be seen whether the North London club would be willing to sell him.

He is under contract at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium until 2029, with an option for an additional year.

Spence's World Cup call-up came as somewhat of a surprise, after a disappointing season for Tottenham.

The 25-year-old was undoubtedly among the few standouts for the Lilywhites, however, and has found himself among Thomas Tuchel's favourite options since the German's appointment.

The same cannot be said of all of the managers Spence has worked with, with Neil Warnock famously criticising his attitude during his time at Middlesbrough.

It was a loan to Nottingham Forest which earned the full-back his move to Tottenham, and after time spent with Stade Rennais and Leeds United, he has now found his feet.

Moyes was a fan of Spence, too, and attempted to sign him for West Ham from Boro in 2021.

A move never materialised for the Hammers but according to The Times, the 25-year-old is now among the options being considered by Everton.

It currently remains unclear how Roberto De Zerbi is viewing the future of Spence this summer.

The Italian manager used him intermittently after his April arrival, and has welcomed the signings of three defenders already this summer.

If Spence can prove his ability for England at the World Cup, however, De Zerbi may be inclined to keep him at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The full-back nearly scored as England won on Wednesday, and is expected to continue to play a part from the bench.
