Deal Likely: Leeds Now 'Favourites' to Sign Nick Pope From Newcastle

Karl Darlow became the somewhat unlikely but reliable number one last season after displacing Lucas Perri, who was expected to be the starter.
Perri now faces an uncertain future, and Leeds could opt to replace him to increase the level of competition between the sticks, but they may need another goalkeeper anyway, given Illan Meslier is out of contract this summer.
Daniel Farke could be a busy man this summer as the Whites look to build on a solid first season back in the Premier League, and a goalkeeper could be high on the German's list.
Nick Pope could be on the move this summer as Newcastle contemplate making a goalkeeper upgrade of their own. The 'world-class' Englishman has been a reliable option at St James' Park, but the Magpies' objectives will likely take them past Pope's depth, and he is likely to be a victim of the ruthless squad decisions Eddie Howe must make if he is to reach those objectives.
According to former Everton chief Keith Wyness, Leeds are favourites to land Pope, telling the Inside Track podcast: "Leeds are favourites (for Pope), but I think they're going to have to sell Perri, who hasn't been a great success as well. He might go something around £10m or £12m. If they can get that, it would be a good deal for them, and I think Pope would be the one to come in.
"There is interest for Ipswich, and that's close, but I do expect him to end up at Leeds. I think that would be a good one for Leeds to get him in there. To me, that would be a strengthening in the position.”
Pope maybe close to giving all that he could have given Newcastle, but he has been a steady hand during a successful period for the club.
Back in 2023, Magpies boss Howe said of Pope after one performance: "I thought Nick was outstanding today. He was excellent against Brentford although he didn’t have a lot to do and his all-round game was at his highest level.
“It’s no coincidence, two big displays and two clean sheets from him which is absolutely crucial to us. He was a huge part of our success last year and no doubt he’ll be the same this year.”
Pope has been one of the better English goalkeepers over the last few years, which is why he has 10 caps to his name, but at 34, it's likely he will drop down a little to continue his career, and Leeds can certainly benefit from what he has to offer, which is still solid Premier League goalkeeping and an impressive shot-stopping ability that is there for everyone to see.
Leeds are 'considering' making a major signing in the summer if they secure promotion to the Premier League.
