South African football icon Doctor Khumalo is set to represent Kaizer Chiefs in Côte d'Ivoire's capital of Abidjan for Ivorian legend Salomon Kalou's initiative.
Kaizer Chiefs legend Doctor Khumalo is set for a star-studded reunion with some of world football's biggest names after receiving a special invitation from former Chelsea and Côte d'Ivoire star Salomon Kalou.
The Amakhosi icon will travel to Abidjan this weekend to take part in the Salomon Kalou For Impact Weekend, a major charitable initiative organised by the Kalou Foundation to support social causes in Côte d’Ivoire.
According to a statement published on Kaizer Chiefs' official website, Khumalo will feature in a glamour exhibition match at the iconic Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny on Saturday, 16 May.
The match will see Team Kalou — made up of Kalou's former club and international teammates — face off against a side captained by fellow Chelsea and Côte d'Ivoire legend Didier Drogba. Khumalo is set to represent Team Drogba in what promises to be a celebration of football, legacy and philanthropy.
The game, which is free to the public, kicks off at 16:00 South African time. Joining Khumalo on the trip will be Yusuf Muhammad, the co-ordinator of the Chiefs Legends team, with both travelling as official guests of the Kalou Foundation.
Chiefs Marketing Director Jessica Motaung believes the visit could further strengthen the relationship between the Glamour Boys and Kalou.
"Having representatives of the Club in Abidjan will help strengthen the ties between Chiefs and Kalou. We are thankful to have been handed an invitation by the Kalou Foundation to be part of the Impact weekend.
"We are honoured to have Doctor representing us alongside so many world and African legends. Yusuf works with our legends, and he will be gaining valuable experience and insight, which will be valuable as we continue to grow the work we do with our former players," she said.
Kalou, who has long admired Khumalo, expressed his excitement about welcoming the former Chiefs captain to Côte d'Ivoire.
"For us to have Doctor Khumalo play against my brother and me is something we are looking forward to. We have long admired him. I have a strong bond with Kaizer Chiefs, and we will grow that with Doctor and Yusuf visiting us in Abidjan," he said, as quoted on Chiefs' website.
Meanwhile, Khumalo says he is honoured to contribute to the charitable initiative and is relishing the opportunity to share the field with football royalty, including Drogba and former Chelsea captain John Terry.
"Kalou is doing excellent work in Cote d'Ivoire, and I am happy to be part of the Impact Weekend; it's going to be wonderful to line up with and against so many legends of the game," he said, as quoted in the club's statement.
