One of African football's most recognisable superfans finally made his FIFA World Cup debut this week, as DR Congo's iconic "living statue" brought his unique matchday ritual to the global stage.
Michel Nkuka Mboladinga, better known as "Lumumba Vea," took his place in the stands for DR Congo's Group Stage clash against Colombia in Guadalajara, instantly becoming one of the most photographed supporters of the tournament.
The devoted fan first rose to international prominence during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where he spent the entirety of DR Congo's matches standing perfectly still as a tribute to the country's assassinated independence leader, Patrice Lumumba.

Although he missed the Leopards' World Cup opener against Portugal, reportedly due to quarantine measures linked to the Ebola outbreak in DR Congo, Lumumba Vea was finally able to join his country's supporters for their narrow 1-0 defeat to Colombia at Estadio Akron.

Known for his remarkable commitment, the superfan once again arrived well ahead of kick-off to prepare for his performance. Dressed in a striking outfit featuring a bright red blazer and tie, a yellow shirt and blue trousers, he climbed onto his pedestal behind the DR Congo bench before the match got underway.
As the players took to the field, Lumumba Vea assumed his trademark pose, standing completely motionless with his right arm raised for the duration of the contest. This display has become synonymous with support for the Leopards, with Lumumba Vea in the centre of their partisan supporters.
His unmistakable presence quickly caught the attention of television cameras and supporters inside the stadium, while clips and photographs of the "living statue" spread rapidly across social media.
