Ex-PL club chief questions 'strange' Manchester United decision behind the scenes

Manchester United chiefs should have announced by now that Michael Carrick will be the club’s next permanent manager.

That is according to former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking to Football Insider, who states that the club have bigger problems to solve behind the scenes.

Carrick has guided Man United back into the Champions League during a successful interim period in charge of the Red Devils.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is expected to be advised to hire Carrick on a permanent basis by chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox.

Talks could then begin between Man United and Carrick over the 44-year-old remaining at Old Trafford ahead of the opening of the summer transfer window.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes it is “strange” that Carrick is yet to be confirmed as Man United’s permanent boss.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness thinks the club can “stabilise”, but they still have hurdles to overcome financially.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Why Man United haven’t appointed Carrick as manager yet is a little bit strange to me.

“Carrick’s got experience, he’s not like an Ole Gunnar Solskjaer coming in. I don’t think that’s a fair comparison. Commercially, I can see how United can now stabilise and start to get things going.

“At least stop digging the bigger hole is probably more to the point right now financially. They’ve still got this big situation around the stadium hanging over them as well.

“It’s not all rosy in the United garden, but certainly the bleeding has stopped, and that’s about as far as I can say.”

Carrick’s achievements in the Man United dugout is set to give the club a boost financially thanks to their qualification for the Champions League.

It was exclusively revealed to Football Insider that Man United could earn £130million extra in revenue from Champions League participation next season.

A return to European competition is expected to help the Red Devils in the transfer market, with the club wanting to strengthen their squad.

A new midfielder and a new defender are seen as a high priority, whilst an addition to their forward line could also be on the club’s radar.
