Ex-PL club chief slams Manchester City's excessive plan to replace Pep Guardiola as manager

Manchester City should not be thinking two steps ahead when Pep Guardiola decides to leave the Etihad, according to Keith Wyness.

The former Everton chief, speaking to Football Insider, believes Man City should not be lining up their next two managers after Guardiola.

Guardiola’s time at the club could be coming to an end, with the possibility that the Spaniard steps down at the end of this season, or leaves when his contract expires in 2027.

Former Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca and current Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany are both leading contenders to replace Guardiola, with the pair having previous ties with Man City.

Man City would not like to lose Guardiola, with the 55-year-old having brought unprecedented success to the club since his arrival in 2016.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – states that Man City are right to have a succession plan in place.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness though doesn’t believe it is the correct approach to have two managers in waiting after Guardiola leaves.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “No, I don’t think it is sensible, that’s going too far.

“It’s all right to have a succession plan and every club should have them for every position. Not only on the pitch, but in the executive teams as well.

“I was always one to try and do that and keep a very watchful eye on potential executives, other clubs, or different people and have some people in mind.

“But trying to think two steps ahead, is going a little bit too far because you really don’t know who’s going to be available at that particular time, and what the needs may be.”

If this is to be Guardiola’s final season at Man City, then the former Barcelona boss could end it with more silverware.

Man City have already won the Carabao Cup this season, and now Guardiola’s side face Chelsea for a chance to secure FA Cup success at Wembley.
