Leeds United star Dominic Calvert-Lewin is on “massive” wages after making the move to Elland Road last summer.

That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider it’s “unusual” a player of his quality would be available on a free transfer.

Calvert-Lewin joined Leeds after his contract at Everton expired, having been unable to agree new terms on Merseyside.

The England international penned a three-year deal at Elland Road, meaning his contract is set to run until June 2028.

The 29-year-old has played an integral role in helping Leeds avoid relegation from the Premier League this season after registering 14 goals in 37 appearances across all competitions.

Team news, line-ups, expert previews and verdicts, and tactical analysis for every Leeds fixture.

Leeds’ stars are set for a £3.5million payout if they maintain their current position in the Premier League due to agreed squad bonuses.

Daniel Farke’s side currently sit 14th in the top-flight table heading into the final two games of the season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson discussed how Calvert-Lewin’s performances show the value of the free agency market for promoted clubs.

“I don’t think there are many Calvert-Lewin’s around,” said Borson.

“It was quite an unusual situation in that, first of all, strikers that can score goals are quite rarely available. His injury record probably made it quite difficult for Everton to offer him what he wanted.

“There are good examples. He is obviously a good example of where something’s gone well, but free agency is an incredibly difficult market.”

Borson insisted Calvert-Lewin will be on significant wages as he compared the striker’s situation to Raheem Sterling’s struggles at Feyenoord.

“You shouldn’t underestimate what Calvert-Lewin ended up costing Leeds,” said Borson.

“I’m sure he’s on a massive wage, and there’s a lot of risk there. You only have to look at someone like Raheem Sterling, who isn’t that old, he’s gone to Feyenoord and it’s been a complete disaster.

“He’s probably been paid quite a lot of money. It’s only a short-term deal, but he’s probably been paid let’s say €200,000 (£173k) a week, so they have still spent millions of euros and he’s done nothing.

“In theory, it’s great, but it’s very hard to make these deals work.”
