Former Nigeria U23 star Promise David made his World Cup debut as Canada were held to a 1-1 draw by Bosnia & Herzegovina in a tightly contested Group B encounter.
Tani Oluwaseyi, who is of Nigerian descent and was born in Abuja, also featured for the Canadian side, marking a significant moment for both forwards on the global stage.
Bosnia & Herzegovina opened scoring in the 21st minute when Jovo Lukic finished from close range after Sead Kolasinac’s aerial challenge from a corner caused confusion in the box.
Canada responded with pressure but lacked cutting edge in the first half, with Jonathan David and Ismael Kone both missing chances.
After the break, Canada increased tempo and introduced attacking substitutions as they searched for an equaliser.
Tani Oluwaseyi featured prominently in attack and recovered from an earlier knock before being withdrawn in the second half.
Canada eventually levelled in the 78th minute when Cyle Larin’s deflected shot beat the goalkeeper to make it 1-1, following an assist from Promise David.
The equaliser secured a valuable point for Canada in a match that had been slipping away.
Both Promise David and Tani Oluwaseyi will take positives from their World Cup debuts as Canada continue their campaign.
