Allnigeriasoccer.com has been told that German Bundesliga club Hamburg are unlikely to sign Philip Otele on a permanent basis this summer.
Otele joined Hamburg during the winter transfer window on loan from FC Basel for the remainder of the season, with the agreement including a purchase option worth five million euros.
However, the Super Eagles forward is now expected to return to his parent club, with Hamburg's new sporting director Kathleen Krüger unwilling to approve a permanent transfer.
The Nigerian attacker made a promising start to life at Hamburg, registering an assist on his Bundesliga debut against FC Heidenheim.
However, he struggled to maintain that momentum, scoring just once in his final eight appearances of the campaign.
Otele also missed Hamburg's last four matches of the season after serving a two-match suspension.
Upon his return, he was limited to a place on the bench against SC Freiburg and was omitted from the squad entirely for the season finale against Bayer Leverkusen.
The forward is now expected to return to Basel ahead of the 2026–2027 season.
His current contract with the Swiss club runs until the end of the 2027–2028 campaign.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future at Hamburg, Otele has been included in Eric Chelle's 27-man squad for next week's Unity Cup.
