'I'm Hearing' - Tottenham Plotting Surprise Move for Liam Delap
Tottenham don't often do business with their London Premier League rivals…
James joined Football FanCast in 2016 following a three-year spell working for Shoot Magazine, working his way up from freelance writer to editor, before moving across to GMS in 2020.
James has created exclusive, opinion and news content on GIVEMESPORT, with a predominant focus on the Premier League.
He has also developed strong working relationships with top tier journalists such as Fabrizio Romano, Dharmesh Sheth and Ben Jacobs, regularly chatting to them as part of an exclusives initiative. Tottenham's main focus has been on strengthening a defence that simply hasn't been good in recent seasons, with two additions to the backline already sealed after club chiefs announced deals to sign Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi on free transfers.
Spurs want more additions to their backline and, after the good news that Pedro Porro has signed a new long-term contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, there could be another centre-back coming through the door.
The north Londoners are working on a deal to bring Brighton and Hove Albion defender Jan Paul van Hecke in to work alongside De Zerbi for the second time in his career.
Tottenham are looking at other positions too, with a new goalkeeper likely to come in should Guglielmo Vicario leave and return to Serie A, while they are working on an agreement to bring Joao Palhinha to the club on a permanent basis following his season-long loan spell from Bayern Munich.
Despite reports that the 30-year-old is keen to return to Portugal, Fabrizio Romano claims that he is giving priority to joining Spurs thanks to his good relationship with De Zerbi.
A winger looks set to arrive too, with talks ongoing for Manchester City winger Savinho.
Tottenham could also make changes in the centre-forward position too, with Randal Kolo Muani already returning to Paris Saint-Germain following his loan spell with Spurs.
Speaking on the Last Word on Spurs YouTube channel on Sunday night, Jacobs revealed that a move for Liam Delap of Chelsea could be one to watch, although the former Ipswich man wants to fight for his spot at Stamford Bridge.
He said: "I think that Liam Delap could be one to watch from Chelsea, another club that Tottenham wouldn't normally do too much business with.
"Newcastle, Everton, Tottenham, the three clubs that like Delap. Before we can clarify whether anything is going to develop there, Delap wants to stay and fight for his place, so he's going to understand where he is in this pecking order, with Joao Pedro number one under Xabi Alonso, who is going to be the number two striker?
"Is it still going to be Delap? Is it alternatively going to be Nico Jackson, who's coming back from a loan spell at Bayern? I think unlikely, but Jackson wants pre-season to see if he can change the new manager's mind.
"Once all that falls into place, if Delap is available on the market, Newcastle, Everton and Tottenham are the three Premier League clubs I'm hearing."
It appears as though there could be a permanent exit from Tottenham this summer.
According to Jacobs, Richarlison is more likely to leave the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium than Solanke this summer, with De Zerbi an admirer of the Englishman.
Spurs are said to believe that they can get a big return out of Solanke when he is fit, and they feel he can be a 'difference-maker' for him.
Should Richarlison end up going, then it appears as though a new striker will also be arriving at Spurs, but a move for Delap would be seen as a surprise after a difficult first season at Chelsea for the 23-year-old following a £30m transfer.
