Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has lauded Japan's goalkeeper, Zion Suzuki, for his outstanding display in the team's 2-2 draw against the Netherlands at the FIFA World Cup.
Suzuki produced a series of impressive saves throughout the encounter, playing a crucial role in keeping Japan in the contest before the Asian side snatched a dramatic late equaliser to secure a valuable point.
The 23-year-old goalkeeper displayed remarkable composure and sharp reflexes throughout the match, frustrating the Dutch attack with four important saves.
Speaking during his halftime analysis on SuperSport, as monitored by allnigeriasoccer.com, Akpeyi said Suzuki's commanding performance vindicated the coach's decision to select him ahead of the more experienced goalkeepers available in the squad.
"I want to give credit to the goalkeeper," Akpeyi explained. "This tells why he was chosen in goal ahead of the older ones on the bench because he has been able to concentrate on the game."
The former Nigerian international also praised Suzuki's concentration, positioning, and alertness throughout the match, noting that his sharp reactions and readiness enabled him to produce a number of crucial saves for his team.
"So far, he has been alert and waiting to see the loose balls with strong hands as well. It tells that he has been able to keep his team in the game."
His impressive display helped Japan secure a valuable point in their opening match of the tournament, with the result leaving the Asian side second in Group F behind leaders Sweden.
