Morocco’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup are facing renewed scrutiny as several key players deal with injuries and fitness concerns ahead of the team’s opening match against Brazil.
The situation has revived memories of the 2022 World Cup, when injuries to key players disrupted Morocco’s historic run.
With less than a week before kickoff, forward Abdessamad Ezzalzouli suffered a knee injury during the first half of a friendly against Norway at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey. Initial examinations indicate ligament damage in his right knee, likely sidelining him for two to three weeks.
Further tests are expected to determine the full extent of the injury and guide his recovery plan.
During the same match, defender Noussair Mazraoui sustained a shoulder issue following a physical challenge with Norway striker Alexander Sørloth. Early medical assessments have been reassuring, and he is not expected to miss more than a week, pending further evaluation.
Several other players are undergoing medical monitoring as the tournament approaches.
Defender Nayef Aguerd, who plays for Olympique Marseille, is recovering from surgery for pubalgia and subsequent bone inflammation that cut his club season short. Despite concerns, he has resumed group training under medical supervision and remains on a structured rehabilitation program.
Midfielders Chamseddine Talbi and Neil El Aynaoui are also being closely monitored, undergoing specific medical assessments while continuing to participate in training sessions.
Meanwhile, Anas Salaheddine is reportedly dealing with an injury that caused him to miss Morocco’s recent friendly against Norway. According to Arryadia TV, the national team’s medical staff is working to prepare him for the opening match, although no official update has been provided.
His absence could pose a challenge, as he is considered a primary backup option for Mazraoui.
Morocco’s medical and coaching staff are managing player workloads cautiously in an effort to avoid further setbacks as the team finalizes preparations for the tournament, which will be held across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
