Qatar manager Julen Lopetegui and Canada boss Jesse Marsch were involved in a heated confrontation at the end of Thursday’s 2026 World Cup clash at the Toronto Stadium.
Joint tournament hosts Canada secured an emphatic 6-0 victory in their second Group B fixture. Jonathan David scored a hat-trick, while Cyle Larin, Nathan Saliba and Mohamed Manai also got themselves on the scoresheet.
However, Canada’s first victory of this summer’s World Cup was overshadowed by an awful injury suffered by Ismael Kone. It’s estimated that the Sassuolo midfielder could be out of action for up to 12 months with a broken leg.
Qatar’s Assim Omer Madibo, looking visibly distressed after inadvertently causing the injury, looked visibly distressed before being sent off. Homam Al Amin had also been shown a red card earlier in the match, meaning Qatar had to play the final 30 minutes with nine players.
There was a curious incident at full-time involving the two managers. Former Spain and Real Madrid head coach Lopetegui was seen having words with Marsch, who was seen nodding his head before suddenly flinging his arms in the air and storming off. Watch the footage below:
It was clear that Marsch was unhappy with Lopetegui’s comments.
"I'm not wasting a single second talking about that,” Marsch said after the match, per The Athletic. Lopetegui was similarly coy, adding: “It’s between him and me.”
However, DAZN Futbol claim Lopetegui rebuked Marsch for attacking in the 99th minute with goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau, who was seen deep inside the Qatar half as Canada pushed in search of a seventh goal.
The incident occurred moments before the final whistle and it’s claimed Lopetegui was unhappy with Marsch’s tactics against his nine-man team.
Tempers flared moments later with Canada and Qatar players clashing, leading to pushing and shoving. The Athletic’s Tom Bogert said Canada were “still clearly upset about Kone’s injury”.
However, it was revealed that Madibo went into Canada’s dressing room after full-time to apologise to Kone about the injury.
"The player apologised to Ismael," Marsch said. "He came into the dressing room and apologised to him. Ismael let the team know that happened.
"I don't think that he meant such a gruesome tackle or gruesome situation. So I don't fault him for that, but I don't understand a reaction from their entire bench to try to start a fight about it being a red card when a clear foul just happened that broke a player's leg."
