Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Willard Katsande has revealed how he was scouted accidentally by Football Manager Bobby Motaung.

Katsande joined Chiefs in August 2011 from Cape Town Spurs (previously Ajax Cape Town) but his signing came as a surprise, as he was not a regular.

'Salt and Pepper', as the defensive midfielder got to be famously known, was acquired during the era Amakhosi were mocked for bringing over too many Zimbabwean players, with their signings dubbed; 'buy one, get one free'.

Katsande was one of the few Zimbabwean players who played long enough for the Glamour Boys to be considered a legend, after spending ten years at the club.

The former hard-tackling midfielder has revealed that he has the national team to thank for him being signed by Chiefs, as he was seen by Motaung by chance in an international match, where 'Bobsteak' attended to watch Lincoln Zvasiya and Justice Majabvi.

"It was tough, coach Norman (Mapeza) called me to the national team, we were playing against Zambia, that's why I say these kids need to respect the national team, no matter what. Bobby flew to Zimbabwe, he came to see Lincoln Zvasiya and he wanted to sign Justice Majabvi," Katsande said on FanzoneZW podcast.

"So he saw me play with Tinashe (Nengomasha) in the midfield, I played well and I even scored. Then he (Motaung) went to Tinashe and said, 'Hey baba, who's this guy!? He said (replied), 'You don't know him, he played for Ajax' and he said 'I've never seen him'. He said 'What is his (contract) situation? He (Nengomasha) said; 'He doesn't even have a contract, they don't want (anymore) him'.

"So he (Motaung) said, 'hah, please we want him'. As we were flying back to SA we were in the same plane and I saw Bobby, he said 'Hey baba, how are you? I want to bring you to Jo'burg but here in Jo'burg there's lights, but I want you to work…he said tomorrow I want you to come to Jo'burg. You know Bobby was a mafia, I love Bobby, trust me, he changed my life, because if you follow this data and whatever, he wouldn't (have) signed me," Katsande added.

The former Warriors midfielder is back in his homeland as the head coach of Grand Legacy in the second division.
