Former Orlando Pirates captain Lucky Lekgwathi believes the club’s passionate supporters have played a major role in the Buccaneers’ strong home form this season, as the Soweto giants continue their pursuit of the Betway Premiership title.

Speaking exclusively to the Siya crew, Lekgwathi credited the atmosphere at the Orlando Amstel Arena for inspiring the team in crucial matches.

“Let me tell you something about what is helping Orlando Pirates to win most of their games at the Orlando Amstel Arena, it’s the vibe at that stadium. Credit must go to the supporters for always filling up the stadium. I know Orlando Pirates, and I know that whenever the supporters are there backing the team, they are the 12th player. They are always playing a big role. I know it because I experienced it too.

“So, for the supporters going to the stadium and filling it up, I think they are playing a big role. With the supporters at the stadium on Saturday and filling it to the rafters, there is no way the team will lose the game.

“So, I think this one (the league title if Pirates win it), must be dedicated to the Orlando Pirates supporters for filling up the stadium consistently this season. Watch this space. They brought a change. Yes, even if the team lost some other games, you could still see that the boys pushed to win because of the fans.”

Pirates have kept themselves firmly in the Betway Premiership title race after continuing to pile pressure on Mamelodi Sundowns in the closing stages of the season.

Sundowns have already wrapped up their campaign on 68 points, while Pirates are on 65 with two matches still to play, leaving the Buccaneers with a chance to leapfrog the Brazilians if they pick more than three points in remaining fixtures.

Pirates return to action against Durban City FC at the Orlando Amstel Arena on Saturday, before concluding their league campaign against Orbit College FC the following weekend at a venue yet to be confirmed.
