Liverpool Set For Darwin Nunez Transfer Return As Announcement Delayed
Liverpool appear to be closing in on a return for Darwin Nunez, if reports are to be believed, with the striker sealing a move back.
Liverpool are closing in on a potentially surprising transfer return this summer, as journalist Juan Pablo Romero reports on a deal that is set to be confirmed in the coming weeks.
The Reds enter the transfer market in need of fresh faces to help energise the squad available at Andoni Iraola's disposal, after the Spaniard replaced the outgoing Arne Slot earlier this month.
That change in head coach will have knock-on effects, as a squad built towards the patient, possession-based football of Slot will need to be moulded back into the high-energy, pressing football that will come with the managerial switch.
Some positions will remain largely untouched, but the forward ranks are among those expected to undergo the most important of changes this summer.
While talks are ongoing to sign Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig, there is the potential for Liverpool to enter the market for a versatile striker option to help cover for Alexander Isak and the injured Hugo Ekitike.
One low-cost option that appears to be on the cards is a return for Darwin Nunez.
Recent reports have stated that Liverpool are interested in a return for Nunez, just one year on from selling the star to Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal.
The Uruguayan international had a tough season, with the latter half of it disrupted by being de-registered from the league to make way for the arrival of Karim Benzema.
That has led to suggestions that his contract could be terminated early, making him a free agent this summer, putting him on the radar of a few different teams.
Liverpool appears to be among them, and according to journalist Martin Charquero, a deal is already done and a return is now on the cards for the 26-year-old.
The reporter claims that confirmation of a deal won't be announced any time soon, because the forward wants to focus on the World Cup with his nation.
Uruguay are in action against Saudi Arabia, Cape Verde, and Spain in group stage action, with hopes of making a deep run into the competition this time around.
Should that run end, then there may be an expectation that the decision surrounding his future will be announced, but it remains to be seen if that will definitely be with Liverpool.
While a return for Nunez may come as something of a surprise to Liverpool fans, it's a deal that should make a whole lot of sense for this summer's business.
The striker has most of the attributes that suit what the Reds will be doing in the future under Iraola, adding some pace and energy on and off the ball.
There are naturally concerns over the finishing ability of the striker, but as a low-cost squad option, it makes sense for him to be around the squad behind the likes of Isak and Ekitike.
Virgil van Dijk has spoken out about a FIFA World Cup rule he believes needs to be changed after the Netherlands' draw vs Japan.
Nunez has shown he is capable of making an impact from the bench, and there is clearly still some affection there from his time at Anfield, even if it didn't go as planned.
It remains to be seen if a deal will go through, but it would be an interesting move from the Reds.
