The Bafana Bafana squad announced by Hugo Broos on Wednesday for the 2026 FIFA World Cup is aligned to a clear structure in all positions across the pitch.

With Broos having made public his final squad, it is now down to the final touches ahead of the tournament opener against Mexico on June 11.

For now, preparations will include a friendly against Nicaragua on Friday (18h00) at Orlando Amstel Arena while another match against Jamaica in Mexico has been proposed.

Broos’ goalkeeping decisions were hugely anticipated, and he opted for the trio of Ronwen Williams, Sipho Chaine, and Ricardo Goss which meant Brandon Petersen was dropped.

Williams is captain and first then with Chaine, he has had the best season of all keepers available for selection.

Goss has been the trusted back-up for the past three years and is familiar with the demands of the national team.

At right-back, Khuliso Mudua is miles ahead and will have Thabang Matuludi for cover.

Then with the left position, some might have been surprised about Bradley Cross’ inclusion, but he was the only cover available for Aubrey Modiba.

The three right footed central defenders are Ime Okon, Nkosinathi Sibisi, and Olwethu Makhanya who can provide a right-back option.

For the left footed central defenders, the options are Mbekezeli Mbokazi, Khulumani Ndamane, and Samukele Kabini who is also an option at left-back.

The central midfielders were without any debate with Teboho Mokoena, Thalente Mbatha, Jayden Adams, and Sphephelo Sithole.

Then for those tasked with playing in attacking areas supporting the top man – Oswin Appollis, Tshepang Moremi, Relebohile Mofokeng, Themba Zwane, Kamogelo Sebelebele, and Thapelo Maseko will have the task.

Zwane’s inclusion has divided opinion, but Broos considered his experience as being key in the dressing room as the oldest player in the squad.

Upfront, the three options are Lyle Foster, Evidence Makgopa, and Iqraam Rayners.

The six players dropped were Brandon Petersen, Thabiso Monyane, Lebohang Maboe, Brooklyn Poggenpoel, Patrick Maswanganyi, and Thapelo Morena.
