The Durban-born centre-back, who leapt to the United States at just 19 years old after progressing from Stellenbosch FC's Diski Challenge setup into the club's first team under coach Steve Barker, continues to grow into an important figure for The Union during his second full MLS campaign.
After initially developing with the club's reserve side in MLS Next Pro, Makhanya is now closing in on 50 appearances in America's top flight under the tutelage of ex-Bafana Bafana defender, Bradley Carnell — a major milestone in the young defender’s rapidly rising career.
In a GQ-esque "10 Essentials" style feature shared by Philadelphia Union's media team, the 22-year-old opened up about the everyday items he simply cannot live without.
Among his essentials were his cellphone, AirPods, iPad, journal, Crocs, a Louis Vuitton cologne, a crucifix chain, and a sleek silver wristwatch.
Makhanya explained that music plays a major role in his daily routine, revealing that his earphones are constantly in use throughout the day. His cellphone, meanwhile, remains an important connection to loved ones back home in South Africa as he continues building his career abroad.
The defender also highlighted the importance of journaling in helping him stay mentally balanced and self-aware while navigating life as a young professional footballer overseas.
According to Makhanya, writing things down allows him to reflect, process experiences, and "express himself" beyond football.
