Retired Super Eagles goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has praised Cabo Verde's veteran goalkeeper Vozinha following his outstanding display in his country's historic goalless draw against Spain at the ongoing FIFA World Cup.
Vozinha delivered a commanding performance between the sticks, producing a series of crucial saves to frustrate the Spanish attack and help Cabo Verde secure a valuable point in their opening match of the tournament.
The 40-year-old goalkeeper made seven saves and kept a clean sheet as the African side produced one of the standout defensive performances of the competition so far.
Speaking during his analysis of the match on SuperSport, as monitored by allnigeriasoccer.com, Akpeyi singled out Vozinha as the key figure behind Cabo Verde's resilient display, describing the veteran shot-stopper as the standout performer on the pitch.
“My credit goes to the goalkeeper, who has actually pulled out the Man of the Match performance this evening,” Akpeyi said.
However, the former Nigerian international praised their tactical discipline, resilience, and commitment to their playing style in keeping Spain at bay.
“I am not much surprised because I know tactically the Cabo Verde side is disciplined,” he added.
“They don't change their tactics, they make sure they curtail you and that is what they have been trying to do to the Spanish team.
“The Spanish team have looked for all ways, they have gone wide, inside but Cabo Verde have been able to stand their ground.”
The remarkable display saw the veteran goalkeeper write his name in the history books of the FIFA World Cup.
According to statistics from Opta Joe, Vozinha became the oldest goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet on his FIFA World Cup debut.
Vozinha will be eager to maintain his impressive form in the upcoming matches as Cabo Verde continue their push for a place in the knockout stage.
