Man United have agreed impressive '£20m' deal but expert warns rules could be ripped up to prevent repeat
Manchester United’s new £20million deal for Betway to sponsor their training kit represents a strong piece of business.
That is according to former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes that the Premier League may rethink their new ban on gambling sponsors as front-of-shirt sponsors.
That ban has come into place ahead of the 2026-27 campaign, and there are several clubs that are currently without sponsors for their new kits as a result.
Wyness believes that the ban is not “achieving the goals” that it set out to do, and feels that the league could yet go back on their stance.
United have been able to bypass the new rulings by creating an opportunity for Betway to sponsor their training gear, in a deal that has raised plenty of eyebrows of late.
The Red Devils have improved drastically under Michael Carrick in recent months, and they are eyeing a big season on and off the pitch next term.
Everton’s former chief Wyness - who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs - believes that United’s deal with Betway will help them bypass the issues facing other Premier League clubs.
He made it clear that the ban has left a “big question mark” for several top clubs to deal with, but United will have no worries about the potential losses of revenue.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the Scottish businessman hailed the work of the club’s commercial team for getting the deal in place.
“There are a number of top-level Premier League clubs that have not got training kit sponsors, and that's going to be a big question mark in the revenue line for quite a few clubs at the moment,” Wyness said.
“And so for United to land £20m with Betway is a good deal. I think the commercial team have done well with that.
“But to not be allowed to have it on the front of the shirt, it does give a big question mark about the wisdom of how this is being handled. And it's not really achieving the goals it was set out to. So if it's bad law or bad rules, then I think you've got to relook at it at some stage.”
Former United chief scout Mick Brown recently told Football Insider that there is an “opening” for Marcus Rashford to return to Old Trafford this summer.
The England international currently has all options available to him as his loan spell with Barcelona draws to a close, and he could potentially come to the fore back at his boyhood club.
Brown made it clear that Carrick is keen to “rebuild bridges” with the winger and is hoping to have him back in his squad if at all possible.
Rashford notched 25 goal involvements for Barcelona during the 2025-26 campaign, but it remains to be seen whether they can afford to sign him permanently this summer.
