The 40-year-old is set to be the third-oldest player at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, behind Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo (41) and Scotland goalkeeper Craig Gordon (43).

How Can Guillermo Ochoa Make World Cup History?

Ochoa, alongside Ronaldo and Argentina superstar Lionel Messi, has the opportunity to set a new men's international record by appearing in a sixth different FIFA World Cup tournament.

However, the Mexico veteran could achieve the milestone before either of his fellow football icons.

With tournament co-hosts Mexico set to take on South Africa in the opening match of the competition on 11 June, Ochoa can become the first player in football history to feature at six FIFA World Cups if he is selected to start against Bafana Bafana.

Messi's Argentina begin their campaign on 16 June, while Ronaldo's Portugal only get underway a day later.

Ochoa Determined To Be Ready For South Africa Clash

Speaking ahead of the tournament opener, Ochoa admitted that reaching a sixth World Cup had not been straightforward, but revealed his determination to be available for selection.

"It hasn't been easy to reach this sixth World Cup, but I'm just as thrilled as the first time, working hard to be on the field on June 11th, if that's what the coach decides," Ochoa said, according to Soy Futbol.

"I've been preparing to be 100 percent available for the coach, the staff, and the Mexican National Team. It's crucial that every player is willing to give it their all, whether you're on the field or cheering from the bench."

Mexico Veteran Highlights Importance Of Team Unity

The experienced goalkeeper also stressed the importance of collective effort as El Tri prepare to begin their World Cup journey on home soil.

"It's important because, at the end of the day, the group is what will get us through - the strength of everyone together. Personally, I'm excited and happy for this new chapter in my life, this new World Cup that's about to kick off," he added.

Should Aguirre hand Ochoa a starting berth against South Africa, the veteran goalkeeper will not only take another step in his remarkable international career, but could also write his name into football history before Messi and Ronaldo have the chance to do the same.
