Milan have already made an approach for Atalanta sporting director Tony D’Amico as they look to replace the outgoing Igli Tare, but face competition from Roma, who are also targeting the director as they prepare to move on from Frederic Massara.
According to Tuttosport, via CalcioMercato, Milan CEO Giorgio Furlani has already reached a form of preliminary agreement with D’Amico, offering a two-year contract with an option for a third season.
D’Amico was reportedly Furlani’s first choice before the club ultimately went with Tare, and the CEO has moved quickly to revive that interest now that a vacancy is opening up. Atalanta, meanwhile, have already moved to protect themselves by securing Cristiano Giuntoli as D’Amico’s replacement.
The final decision, however, rests with owner Gerry Cardinale, whose verdict on the club’s management structure following a difficult season will be decisive.
According to the reports, the outcome of an internal power struggle at Milan will determine the direction taken. If Cardinale maintains his current level of influence over sporting decisions, D’Amico is expected to be confirmed. If Ibrahimovic’s position within the club is strengthened, a different profile would be sought instead.
Roma represent a genuine alternative destination for D’Amico. The Giallorossi are set to part ways with Massara, who never established a strong working relationship with Gian Piero Gasperini.
The coach has reportedly asked the Friedkin family for guarantees, including a sporting director he trusts, with whom to build the squad from next season. D’Amico fits that profile precisely, the pair worked together successfully at Atalanta, where they won the Europa League under Gasperini.
