Reports in Italy claim that Juventus-owned Nico Gonzalez has an agreement in place to stay on with Atletico Madrid for the 2026-27 season, but the two clubs must swiftly arrange a fee as Diego Simeone’s side can no longer trigger their €32m obligation to buy clause.

Nico Gonzalez has spent the 2025-26 season on loan in Madrid. Atleti agreed to pay Juventus a €1m fee, potentially rising to €2m with bonuses to sign the Argentine on loan for the season, and there was also a potential obligation to buy clause included in the deal for a further €32m.

It is no longer possible for that €32m obligation to buy clause to be triggered, though. According to recent reports, Atletico would have been obliged to purchase Nico Gonzalez permanently in the event that he played for 45 minutes or more in 60% of the the LaLiga matches that he was available for in 2025-26.

Given that he was still a Juventus player for the first three matches of the 2025-26 season, Nico Gonzalez would have needed to play for 45 minutes or more in 21 league matches in order to hit the 60% mark.

Though Nico Gonzalez has featured in 24 LaLiga matches this season, only 16 of those have been for 45 minutes or longer. Now there are only two LaLiga matches of the season left to go, and the Juventus loanee is not expected for feature anyway given that he has missed the last three games with a muscular injury.

According to reports from Tuttosport, Atletico and head coach Simeone are keen to keep Nico Gonzalez on board beyond the end of his loan spell, just not for the €32m fee that had been agreed last summer. Reports elsewhere indicate that the agreement is for a contract until the summer of 2031.

Tuttosport claims that there is already an agreement in place between Nico Gonzalez’s entourage and the Atleti camp, and that Juventus are still keen to negotiate a sale, sooner rather than later as well. That is because Juventus must raise funds before June 30 in order to avoid punishment from UEFA.

Juventus know that they must raise in excess of €20m if they are to avoid making a capital loss on Nico Gonzalez. Saturday’s reports claim that Atletico will not pay above €30m for a winger who has recently turned 28, but there is optimism that they can meet in the middle for a fee in the region of €25m.
