Fortune Makaringe turned down the opportunity to join Kruger United earlier this season, but has no regret over not accepting their offer despite the club winning automatic promotion to the Betway Premiership.

Kruger made an offer to Makaringe while he was still a free agent during the first half of the season. He was without a club after leaving relegated Cape Town City at the end of last season, but decided against it.

He ended up signing for Leicesterford City early in 2026 and had to watch as Kruger secured automatic promotion to the Premiership. The former Orlando Pirates and Maritzburg United midfielder, however, has no regrets over not joining the Mpumalanga-based outfit.

"Not really. It was a conscious decision, that of which I had to sit down with my family and try to find common connection and consensus, to be specific. My wife was pregnant at the time. She was like four or five months pregnant, so relocating to Mpumalanga, having come from Cape Town, would destabilise everything," Makaringe said

Yes, Mpumalanga is home, but I needed to manage and take care of things that matter most. I can just leave my wife, go stay in Mpumalanga and maybe need to get a rental apartment while I am there. Those are things when you need to consider, when I can just be in Joburg and have the luxury of going to work and still coming back home without ruining my routine and still be with my family and be in a professional setup. Having my family with me through thick and thin has made me realise that I need these people the most.

"I am really happy Kruger managed to finish first and win promotion. Seeing a team from home being in the Betway Premiership is going to liberate the kids from Thulamahashe, from Bushbuckridge, Acornhoek and Nelspruit, to get a chance to be in a professional setup."

Makaringe signed a contract with Leicesterford until the end of the season, so he is in a position of being able to look for a new home or renew his deal with the club.
