Numbers Don't Tell The Full Story Of Matlou's Amakhosi Journey

Matlou arrived at Naturena in July 2022 from Swallows FC as one of the exciting midfield talents in the local game. Having impressed with his energy, technical ability and eye for a pass, there was hope that he could establish himself as a regular in the heart of Amakhosi's midfield.
While injuries and fierce competition for places often disrupted his progress, Matlou remained a committed member of the squad throughout his stay at the club.
His statistics tell a modest story on paper.
Across four seasons, the midfielder made 46 appearances, registered three assists and did not find the back of the net. Yet numbers alone do not always capture a player's contribution within a squad environment.
During his time at Chiefs, Matlou worked under different coaching regimes and remained part of a group tasked with helping restore the club's fortunes during a challenging period.
Opportunities were not always consistent, but when called upon he offered versatility and depth in midfield.
Perhaps the most important moment of his Chiefs career came during the 2024/25 campaign, when Amakhosi finally ended their lengthy trophy drought by lifting the Nedbank Cup.
While not one of the club's headline stars, Matlou played his role in a squad that delivered a long-awaited piece of silverware to the club's supporters.
That achievement means his name will forever be associated with a significant chapter in recent Chiefs history. For a club that had gone years without lifting a major trophy, every member of that squad contributed towards ending the wait.
