Bafana Bafana star Ime Okon will see his hopes of promotion to the Bundesliga decided on the final day of the season.
Hannover 96 were held to a 1-1 draw by VfL Bochum on Saturday, meaning Okon’s side remain third in Bundesliga 2 heading into the final matchday this coming weekend.

Should Hannover finish second after their final game of the season against 1. FC Nurnberg on Sunday, 17 May, it would guarantee Okon and his teammates direct promotion to the 2026/27 Bundesliga.
If they finish third, however, they will face a promotion/relegation play-off against the team that ends 16th in the German top flight.
As things stand, though, Hannover could still drop to fourth place in Bundesliga 2, which would end their promotion hopes altogether.
Okon has been a key part of Hannover’s resurgence this season in what has been his debut campaign in Germany, helping the side secure the third-best defensive record in Bundesliga 2.
Hannover currently rank third for the fewest goals conceded this season, with Okon having featured in 25 league matches at centre-back.

His performances also earned him a call-up to the Bafana Bafana squad during the March 2026 international break, where he impressed in both friendlies against Panama national football team.
Coach Hugo Broos is expected to announce his provisional squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup this week, with Okon hoping to be included.
